Churches list services for Holy Week

The program, “Women at the Well”, will include music and narration in celebration of Easter. All are welcome. St. Luke’s is at 600 S. Chestnut St., Knoxville.

The Sunday Worship Service is usually held at 9:30 a.m., but on Easter Sunday the congregation will be holding a special service at Equinox Terrace at 9:45 a.m., and then heading to the Northshire Baptist Church building for an 11:00 a.m.

In more modern times, palms are distributed to Mass-goers and are blessed with holy water.

Franciscan Monastery (1400 Quincy St., N.E.) hosts a Tenebrae service tonight from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

Metropolitan Community Church of Washington hosts a Easter worship service today at 9 and 11 a.m. The community worship service will begin at 7 p.m.at the Baptist Church in Jefferson. Easter services are slated for 11 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

April 13, Thursday, Maundy Thursday Service: 7 p.m.in the sanctuary.

Peace Lutheran Church, 565 12th St., has announced its Holy Week worship schedule, starting on Sunday, when the Palm Sunday service is at 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion, open to all, will be celebrated. This will be at Norwood, 2110 Merchant Drive.

April 16: 6:30 a.m., Easter sunrise service at Slippery Rock Cemetery; 11 a.m., Easter Sunday worship.

When I was leading Children’s Chapel this week, one of our beloved “little ones” asked me, “Father Tom, are we going to do our Jesus march again this year?”

Family of Christ Church is hosting “Pics with Chicks” on Easter Sunday, offering to take free photos of families and children with chicks and ducklings.

First African Baptist Church: 901 Clifton Ave., Sharon Hill, celebrates Palm Sunday at 9:45 a.m.

Master’s Domain Church of God in Christ will host a “Super Easter Egg Hunt and Picnic” on Saturday, April 15, from noon until 4 p.m.at 511 Freemont Ave. The church is at 1083 Old Andrew Johnson Highway in New Market.

A Palm Sunday cantata, “Amazing Love: Recalling Christ’s Sacrifice”, will be 11 a.m. Sunday, 2600 Ashland Road. There will be plenty of breakfast casseroles, fruit dishes and Easter breads plus (of course) Coffee. Breakfast follows in the Fellowship Hall.

St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 125 Main St., 7:30 a.m. worship. Wednesday night Bible study is at 7. Good Friday, the day of Our Lord’s death on the cross, is a day of fasting and abstinence.

Between Palm Sunday and Holy Saturday before Easter, Christians recognize this as the week Jesus Christ was betrayed by Judas, put on trial, and crucified. They will have breakfast and Sunday School simultaneously. Plan to attend your favorite place of worship on these days, and the Easter Egg Hunts that usually continue into the afternoon.

Eggs are very popular during Easter because it symbolizes new life, especially the life given to Jesus when He was resurrected. This event is for children 12 and under. Prizes awarded to winners of each age group. Some churches also observe a foot-washing ceremony to commemorate Holy Thursday.
