Clinton making a personal pitch to New Hampshire voters

February 10 00:28 2016

Speaking in New Hampshire on Sunday, Clinton delivered an extended rebuke of the Sanders supporters, whom he said subject people who back his wife to “vicious trolling”. And we will do everything we can, and I think we have tried.

“Given lingering questions about Clinton’s sometimes prosaic style on the stump and the assorted baggage she’s accrued, they likely aren’t ready to end the fight”.

“The hotter this election gets, the more I wish I were just a former president and, just for a few months, not the spouse of the next one because, you know, I have to be careful what I say”, Bill said.

“But then Bernie ran for president and I loved his ideas”. Unfortunately, like so many other influential and famous people that have aged out of rational thought (lookin at you, Mr. Eastwood), she missed the memo on when to shut up.

Those who pay only partial attention to politics – as most unaffiliated voters do – could be forgiven for not even realizing there is a contest on the Democratic side. The neighboring Vermonter leads the former secretary of state by double digits in polls here with just a day to go.

Still, Sanders’ ability to win over women voters – long considered Clinton’s strongest base – suggests that she could struggle to piece together a reliable coalition in upcoming states as well. Barack Obama easily won independents from Hillary Clinton, but there were not enough of them to overcome her advantage among Democratic partisans, while they powered McCain-an all-time favorite among the New Hampshire independent set-to a narrow victory over Mitt Romney.

Why aren’t younger women more excited about Clinton? Bernie Sanders, at a campaign stop in Milford Sunday.

Matt Wassong, 17 years-old, strikes a pose at Hillary Clinton’s headquarters in Concord New Hampshire.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota reminded that same group of “how important this historical moment is for us”.

But what if Sanders loses the Democratic nomination? But last November, she was the only female Democratic senator who did not attend an event where the others endorsed Clinton. “I support paid family leave so that women, particularly young women, can better balance family and work”, she said, adding she would make sure health care is secure and affordable.

This is an fantastic tack for Bill Clinton, of all people, to take.

“When the exact same problems crop up in separate campaigns, with different staff, at what point do the principals say, ‘Hey, maybe it’s US?'” Axelrod tweeted. “…We have so many women standing up and volunteering and giving so much of their time for Hillary Clinton“. Steinem commented on the young women’s actions saying that they’re getting more active as they get older while boys stay with Sanders. According to a CNN tracking poll released Monday evening, Sanders is leading Clinton in New Hampshire 61% to 35%. “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!” she said. And because of that Clinton has had to declare herself as a progressive, and take firm stands on progressive issues.

Last week, she spoke on the Senate floor about crippling student debt, her opposition to the Pacific trade treaty and the laxity with which she says the government punishes corporate crimes.

Katharine Zaleski, co-founder and president of Power to Fly, which helps women find the best remote jobs in tech, believes younger women, namely the ones in college, haven’t experienced the unequal landscape for women that Clinton has worked to overcome because they haven’t started work yet.

“And as a result of that, I want them to give us free ice cream”.

“She’s not just this really smart, tough, accomplished person”, said Kathy Sullivan, a longtime Clinton supporter. “Well that all depends on how you define feminism”.

The weekend collection of comments about young women and what they “ought to do” in relationship to Hillary Clinton is, no doubt, insulting. “She’s more electable than Bernie is, I think that I don’t want a Republican in office so I think that she’s the one that’s going to be able to beat the Republicans when it comes down to it, and also her experience, she has so much experience”. “I mean, some people – especially freshmen – don’t know how to go about registering to vote”.

Asked why he was backing Sanders, the former NAACP president cited Martin Luther King Jr.’s “three giant triplets of evil: racism, militarism and greed”.

Have a Seat, Steinem.
