Coaches Chip Kelly, Mike McCoy fired as National Football League regular season ends

January 03 04:20 2017

The 49’ers finished their season with a record of 2-14, second worst in the National Football League behind the 1-15 Cleveland Browns. “Our team’s disappointing performance has not matched this team’s potential and has fallen short of the demanding standards that we seek to impose throughout our organization”. We all expected to see this team progress and develop as the season went on, but unfortunately that did not happen. York said he met with both men midseason and was not pleased with the direction of the team and their vision for improving the franchise. He said as much when asked why he quickly dismissed a head coach who inherited a mess: The 49ers went 5-11 in 2015, and arguably had less talent with Kelly before 20 players landed on injured reserve. “All we can control is how we coach our players and what we do with them”. At the end of the day, Chip Kelly is not a good coach, and while Dak Prescott may have been a good long-term solution, he wouldn’t have changed anything this season.

“Obviously, your record speaks for itself, but I think there’s more to it than that”, York said. “If the team doesn’t get back to the top of the NFC quickly, all anyone is going to remember is that the 49ers let Jim Harbaugh leave for no reason”. Jed York confirmed the dismissal of both Kelly and Baalke.

What is still unknown is if head coach Chip Kelly will follow Baalke out the door or if that decision will be left to whoever takes the reigns as general manager at Levi’s Stadium.

This is at least Chip Kelly putting his name on some of it, but I imagine further leaks will be put out there. Kelly, who was sacked by the Philadelphia Eagles with one game remaining last season, took over but has won just two of 15 games, both against the Los Angeles Rams, and lost 13 straight between those two victories. The 55 year-old was taken to hospital with a complex migraine in October and also suffered a stroke in 2013 during his time with the Texans.

Sean Payton looks to have finished his time with the New Orleans Saints, and there is reportedly interest between him and the Rams as they look for a replacement for Jeff Fisher.

“It’s definitely young guys; guys that haven’t played a lot of football make more mistakes – that’s just the bottom line”, Beadles said.

“We need to start fresh and start with a new culture between a general manager and a head coach”. Whether they move or not is still uncertain, but if they move to somewhere like Vegas, that alone could bring a decent head coach.

Among coaches that haven’t been fired yet, but soon could be are Chuck Pagano of the Indianapolis Colts.
