The Crimson Tide exceeded those expectations throughout the regular season, rolling through their competition this year with only two games (Ole Miss, LSU) decided by less than 15 points. Even Florida (which lost 54-16 to Alabama in the SEC title game) was an 8-4 team.
“Their middle linebacker (Rueben Foster) is just a war daddy and could be the first defensive guy picked”. They thought it was time well spent. They’ve got really good skill players on offense at the receiver and running back positions. “No team is ideal”. The Tide are rolling into Atlanta and the Peach Bowl with a matchup against Pac-12 Champion Washington in the semifinal. In Browning, the Huskies have the best quarterback Alabama has faced, so it’s possible Washington could do some damage through the air. “There’s not any one challenge. That’s our trademark. That’s our M.O.as a team; that’s what people know us as”. But at the same time we’ve just got to do what we do and make sure we finish.
“And I think that when my mind does drift, I oftentimes thank Coach James for this, because every vehicle dealer that I’ve ever had or known all wants to be a coach. I want to experience SEC football this way”. In other words, it’s almost impossible to move the ball against the Tide.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban celebrates after defeating Clemson in the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 11, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona.
“I would never be a coach, never be sitting here as a coach if it wasn’t for, you know, Don James”, Saban said of the former University of Washington head coach Thursday. You’ve got to make them earn it, make them go the whole field. “It’s great to have more fans”.
Despite what you might have heard, no one has been cruel to the Washington Huskies in their media sessions this week.
As good a bowl coach as Saban has been, Petersen, with two Fiesta Bowl wins at Boise State, isn’t too shabby either. Browning has a tendency to put pressure on opposing offenses: The Huskies offense averages 44.5 points per game, good enough for fourth best in the FBS rankings.
The Crimson Tide come into this game as 14.5 point favorites, which honestly is no surprise considering how historically dominant they’ve been this season combined with the national perception of Washington.
If the NCAA ever hired a commissioner, Washington coach Chris Petersen, with a smile, made it clear who he thinks the man is for the job: Alabama coach Nick Saban.
“Every game, when the game starts, everybody brings their best game, their A-game”, defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson said. There is no team in college football more familiar with playing on a big stage. They create turnovers and they turn those turnovers into points. What kind of mindset do we need to have to do that? But for Alabama, they’re pretty (stout) as far as they have great players. While the performance wasn’t one of standout his games, the freshman’s ability to control the ball allowed for Alabama to pull away in the game.
Just like back then, a win would mean changing paradigms, making history and providing hope to scores of other programs dreaming of one day doing what Washington has already done.
Ohio State’s offense is more limited than Clemson’s because the Buckeyes have struggled in the passing game much of the year.
“What I’ve learned about this game is the mind-set of: Is this a bowl game or is this a playoff game, which I think every player has to decide for himself, every coach has to decide for himself”, Saban told the Associated Press Monday.
“You’ve got to stay in the game and not make mistakes”. On the other side, Alabama will have plenty of weapons of its own, including ArDarius Stewart, who leads the team in receiving with 852 yards and eight touchdowns on 52 receptions.
