The comedian Bill Cosby, who was charged with aggravated indecent assault on Wednesday morning, arrived at court in Pennsylvania for his arraignment. The DA for Montgomery County at the time chose not to press criminal charges. He seemed to have trouble seeing the paperwork and his lawyers helped him hold a pen. But he seemed at ease, laughing and chatting with his attorneys.
“If you look at the deposition itself then you’ll see there’s no admission of criminal wrongdoing with respect to Mr. Cosby“, his lawyer said. Cosby, who is free on $1 million bail, could face up to 10 years in prison. He had been mentoring Thompson for about a year, when an unwanted sexual encounter occurred at his New York City home, she says.
Throughout, fleets of tweets poured onto Twitter from journalists who were there and observers watching it on TV and commenting.
Cosby and his lawyer were photographed outside Philadelphia embracing as he boarded his private jet on Tuesday night to return to his mansion in MA.
Monique Pressley, one of Cosby’s lawyers and spokeswoman for his legal team, went on the Today show and declared that Cosby is not guilty of second-degree aggravated indecent assault back in 2004. The victim was frozen, paralyzed.
“The evidence is strong and sufficient to proceed”, Steele said. Another says she did a kind of “happy dance”.
A former Temple University employee told police the comedian drugged and violated her at his home near Philadelphia in 2004.
Pressley also questioned the motives of the District Attorney’s office.
“His current health status is that he’s a 78-year-old blind man who they’ve chosen to be charged”.
So Constand sued him in civil court instead. He settled a year later, but only after he gave almost 1,000 pages of deposition testimony. Among other things, Cosby admitted obtaining quaaludes to give to women he wanted to have sex with. The former America’s Next Top Model judge alleges that Cosby raped her in 1982 and that Cosby attorney Marty Singer branded her a “liar” previous year when she brought the incident up. It’s the first time Cosby has been charged after decades of allegations by dozens of women. His next court hearing is January 14.
Entertainer Bill Cosby has long maintained that his extramarital conquests over the years were all consensual.
A key question if the case goes to trial is whether the judge will allow supporting testimony from other accusers to show similar “bad acts”, even though it is too late to bring charges in most if not all of those instances.
Pressley says she has full confidence her client will be exonerated, and insists he will not take a plea deal. Despite the denials, Cosby did settle a civil case with Constand for an undisclosed sum of money. “What we have is the fulfillment of a campaign promise from a prosecutor who used this case and used the current climate about the allegations against my client in order to get into office and had to make good before the statute of limitations completely ran out on what he promised in order to get in that office”.
