By now, everyone knows that Conor McGregor beat Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 in the main event to become the undisputed UFC featherweight champion.
McGregor revealed it was time to be with his family before working out what his next career move would be. Joe Duffy, the last man to beat McGregor in 2010, lurks in the lightweight division. “I can see the lightweight belt, see how the guys get on, and see how injured the victor is and do that midway between now and July”.
McGregor unified the UFC Featherweight Championship belt, like he always said he would.
“I understand why previously they would do that, because other fighters don’t fight as frequently as I do”.
“I’ll tell you one thing that won’t be happening”, said McGregor. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s a tough weight cut but tell me one time I’ve missed it or not shown up fresh the next day”. There’s no going up and vacating. So, I’m an active champion.
Should McGregor do so, he’ll face the victor of next month’s Donald Cerrone-Rafael dos Anjos lightweight bout, according to UFC president Dana White.
Jose Aldo’s coach and head of Nova Uniao, Andre Pederneiras, believes Conor McGregor will never be able to land the left hand that knocked out the former UFC featherweight champion again.
Congratulations to the staff at the UFC on a historic week in the sports history and a fantastic 2015 year for the company. There’s no going up and vacating. McGregor only debuted in the UFC two years ago, while his Brazilian opponent had been the champion for six years and hadn’t lost in a decade. Well, except Aldo himself.
“I said his right hand would get him into trouble”, he said, “it’s the shot I predicted, I said he’d overload on his right hand, I said I’d slip and I’d bang the left hook and that’s what happened”.
“It feels attractive. I’ve dreamt this so much, so clearly, so precisely and so frequently that it’s manifested itself into reality”.
It doesn’t look like he’ll be getting that any time soon.
