Cosby’s lawyer accuses D.A

Under Arrest. Comedian and actor Bill Cosby was arraigned Wednesday on accusations that he drugged and fondled Andrea Constand in 2004.

Constand, a former employee at his alma mater, Philadelphia’s Temple University, was the first woman to come forward with sexual assault allegations against Cosby and is the first criminal charge brought against him. Cosby was arrested and charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his home in January 2004.

USA comedian Bill Cosby has broken his silence since he was charged with sexual assault after he tweeted a brief message aimed at his supporters.

“Friends and fans, Thank You”, he wrote.

On Thursday, Cosby’s lawyer, Monique Pressley, told Today that she was aiming for full exoneration for Cosby, and that she would accept nothing less.

Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, a lawyer for several of the women accusing Cosby of sexually assaulting them, but whose cases occurred too long ago to press charges, told NBC her clients are “very happy” that Cosby has been charged.

It’s the first criminal case against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.

By Wednesday afternoon, following a short visit to an Elkins Park courtroom, a sweater-wearing Cosby was released at $1 million bail and ordered to surrender his passport.

Cammarata also was pleased about the criminal charges filed against Cosby, which he said could aid his clients’ civil suit. “What we have is the fulfillment of campaign promise from a prosecutor who used this case and used the current climate about the allegations against my client in order to get into office”, Pressley said. “She feels that they believe her, and to any victim, that is foremost in your mind: Are people going to believe me?” Cosby admitted to giving Quaaludes to a woman with whom he wanted to have sex, according to the paperwork.

The wave of allegations against Cosby have scuttled the comedian’s acting projects and live shows in the past year.

On Wednesday, Cosby, holding a cane, walked slowly and unsteadily into court on the arms of his attorneys, tripping on a curb as he made his way into the building. The charges were filed one day before the legal deadline.

Instead of advice, she said he offered her three blue pills to help her relax.

The irony of Bill Cosby has been evident for months: a beloved father figure, a public moralist, accused again and again and again of being a sexual predator, of taking advantage of his public standing for years.
