Cyanogen commercialized the OS CyanogenMod offering more features than Google Android, but the company has now pulled the plug on the OS. Some of the developers, designers and others who worked on CyanogenMod, are now working on forking the source code and related patches to a new open source project called LineageOS.
Cyanogen Inc. will still be operating and is set to focus on the new Cyanogen Modular OS platform development. As for now, the future is uncertain for CyanogenMod and the devices that use the OS.
There was a reshuffle in the top management of company which saw Kirt McMaster stepping down as CEO, while COO Lior Tal becoming the CEO.
Many phones like Oneplus one and Lenovo ZUK Z1 came preloaded with the operating system.
It began with layoffs, office closures, replacement of CEOs and finally the ritual of fixing end date after which there will be no more news of Cyanogen. The code will still be open source for anyone who wants to build CM personally.
The announcement of the planned shutdown confirmed rumors that Cyanogen, despite being active over the past few weeks, told employees internally at the end of November that the company is headed towards closure. But OnePlus has since shifted to its own custom version of Android, a split possibly triggered by Cyanogen inking a conflicting deal with India’s Micromax. Even if they managed to regroup and rebuild its infrastructure, the threat of a sale to a third-party would be constantly looming over their heads. Some changes include Cyanogen ending infrastructural and monetary support for CyanogenMod. According to the post, CyanogenMod is going back to the community of developers where it originated from. Users with devices that run the Cyanogen OS will now have to make the transition to CyanogenMod ROM. This is an action that was not unpredictable given the public departure of Kondik (cyanogen himself) from the company, and with him our last remaining advocate inside Cyngn’s leadership.
Cyanogen, the ambitious start-up built make a better version of Android by Google, has made a decision to shut its services.
Note that despite, CyanogenMod being a separate and independent project, it still relied heavily on Cyanogen Inc’s development infrastructures and resources. Lineage’s goals are to enable the company’s return to the grassroots community effort that is firmly associated with custom Android releases and to maintain its professional quality and integrity. So don’t give up hope just yet – Cyanogen and CyanogenMod may be no more, but their legacy just may continue.
