U.S. Republican lawmakers on Wednesday unveiled an immigration package that would tighten border security, end chain migration and fund U.S. President Donald Trump’s border wall, while shielding almost a million so-called “Dreamers” from deportation.
Earlier yesterday, the White House branded the federal judge’s ruling as “outrageous”.
“This administration was really just targeting DACA out of a misplaced political agenda”, said Sundrop Carter, who runs the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition.
The initiative of the Republican lawmakers proposes that the beneficiaries of DACA be able to have a permit that allows them to reside in the USA, without being deported, for three years, with the possibility of renewing this permission indefinitely.
Trump past year scrapped the Obama-era DACA program, which allows certain young immigrants brought illegally to the U.S.as children to live and work here without fear of deportation.
For more on the judge’s decision and what it means for DACA recipients in the country now, I got a hold of Michael Olivas this morning. “We’ll see what happens”, he said, though he added it was “unlikely” that he would be called for interview. “Whether it’s by the president’s announcement or a court decision, it’s time for us to meet the president’s challenge and to create a law that solves this problem”.
The tentative deal also addresses border security, including a border wall, the diversity visa lottery and chain migration.
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a frequent Trump critic, said on Thursday the comments “smack of blatant racism, the most odious and insidious racism masquerading poorly as immigration policy”.
The announcement comes days after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to end DACA. “Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation”.
“Honestly”, Perdue told reporters, “we’re not that far away”.
His proposal, he said, was not a indictment of the actions of Trump or Mueller in this specific instance, but a protectionary measure he hopes could have an “enduring impact for future administrations” as well.
But officials also said they were not accepting requests from individuals who had never been granted deferred action under DACA.
The program that has given her the opportunity to work and go to school legally in the United States was reinstated.
“Any bill we pass must improve jobs wages and security for American citizens – the people who elected us”, President Trump said. “I think the message has now been delivered that we need to get everybody at the table and we’ll take the best of their ideas”.
