‘Democracy Spring’ protesters arrested in Capitol Rotunda

With the primary elections heating up, Democratic Spring Rallies have popped up at large cities across the U.S. Dawson and the dozen other people she was arrested with were protesting the issue of large corporations having an impact on U.S. policy.

It was not immediately clear what she was arrested for, though TMZ reports many of those arrested in her group were charged with obstruction and other similar offenses.

MRCTV went to the “Democracy Springs” protest on Capitol Hill Thursday, and interviewed the liberal activists who gathered there to protest the involvement of millionaires and billionaires in the political system.

“The government should pass legislation so that we get big money out of politics and every person has a vote and the vote counts”, she said.

Following her release on Friday, she tweeted, “Sit in, sit down, stand up…”

Democracy Spring’s website marks Monday, April 18 as the final day of the sit-ins.

Both the week-long protests in Washington and Friday’s nationwide demonstrations led by the activist group Represent.Us have tapped into some of the voter frustration seen on the presidential campaign trail.

Dawson was demonstrating against the corruption of money in politics and was carrying a sign calling for the overturn of the so-called “Citizens United” law which deregulated campaign spending by outside organizations and was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2010.

Dan Krassner, political director of the movement, said: ‘Our message is it doesn’t matter if you’re conservative or progressive.

According to activists, 13 people were arrested and another two were on site recording (they’ve been dubbed the #dome15).

The outspoken actress, who was previously arrested in 2004 for protesting former President George W. Bush, has been documenting the rally via Instagram.

“This is our moment”, she said on the initiative’s Facebook page.
