Pretended for years that Trump was a real billionaire (and thus an important person) simply because he was a good character to use in their stories. The vast majority of them just want to be able to keep their cushy jobs without having to take too many risks or work too hard.
On Friday the US President ranted on social media (again) about “fake news” outlets, tagging the New York Times, NBC News, ABC, CBS and CNN. The cornerstone of American democracy is the First Amendment, which guarantees a free press.
But it’s not all bad news for the media.
Who is right and who is wrong in this exchange between Trump and the media in USA?
I see media as investigative journalists who dig for information that governmental entities won’t share for some reason or another instead of being transparent.
All that being said, there are indeed times when Trump’s analysis of the news media is EFFECTIVELY true. Online-only outlets have seen a surge in Web traffic, boosting ad revenue. Just before taking office, the reality star and real estate magnate dismissed CNN reporter Jim Acosta as “fake news” and refused to answer his questions during a news conference in January because he didn’t like the outlet’s coverage of an unverified intelligence report that claimed to link Russian Federation to Trump’s business interests.
Here to answer those questions and more are: Bruce Dold, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Chicago Tribune; Jim Kirk, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Chicago Sun-Times; and Hugh Dellios, the Chicago News Editor for the Associated Press.
Mr. Trump’s press conference showcased the kind of bloviating, score-settling, reality-denying narcissism we’ve come to expect from this president for the month he’s been in office. “I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history”. “The news is fake because so much of the news is fake”, he said on Thursday.
Enjoy your President’s Day, everybody!
“When the media lies to the people, I will never let them get away with it”.
When asked to explain the apparent contradiction, Trump said it was the “tone” of the reporting that made the news fake. They’ll even make it negative. His words, as well as his actions, have consequences. But with Trump, who recognizes the power of language, that’s not necessarily the best approach. “SICK!”, Trump tweeted on Friday.
Trump repeated the attack Saturday before thousands of cheering supporters in Melbourne, Fla., when he blamed the media for undermining his administration.
As with Memorial Day, you couldn’t say Happy Not My President’s Day.
Such a cautionary note may seem over the top.
In the almost one month in office, after winning the Presidential elections, Trump has announced number of measures including the much discussed and controversial ban on visa for citizens from seven muslim countries.
“Trump is a master media manipulator”, cautioned Balkin. It was Zucker, who pushed NBC to launch Trump’s The Apprentice in 2004 when he was head of entertainment at the network. Some are trying to soften him up. President Donald Trump craves those things on steroids and, when he doesn’t get what he wants, you get the sort of display the world witnessed on Thursday. USA civil rights organizations report a surge in donations since last month’s inauguration.
Yes, I’m definitely an enemy of them.
