Everybody did, but first a quick correction: Consider is the wrong verb to describe what Fox did when asked postgame about benching Glennon for Mitch Trubisky, the obvious move now.
Just like that, the Bears’ embarrassing 29-7 road loss at Raymond James Stadium had its signature moment.
The same could be said on Glennon’s first interception, which was forced to tight end Dion Sims, who was covered by multiple Buccaneers. Glennon finished with 301 passing yards on the afternoon, but it took him 45 attempts to get there, and most of the yardage came with the game well out of reach.
NOTES: Bears LB Nick Kwiatkoski (pectoral muscle) and LG Tom Compton (hip) left in the first half, then were ruled out of the game.
Noah Spence sacked Glennon, forcing a second-quarter fumble that led to Jacquizz Rodgers’ 1-yard TD run. “That wasn’t the Mike Glennon’s Bears, that was the Chicago Bears“.
As a rookie last season, the 22-year-old appeared in 15 regular-season games for the Bears while notably rushing for 1,313 yards and six touchdowns on 252 carries.
“Sometimes, that phrase can be misconstrued”, Loggains explained last week.
“This tells me great things are coming”, said Bucs linebacker Lavonte David, who had a game-high nine tackles. We’re in the same position again and have to go back to the drawing board and do more for my team so we can come out on the other side. Indeed, it looked like Bellamy had Bucs cornerback Robert McClain beat, but he stumbled out of his break. Both fumbles were the result of a poor pocket presence.
ABOUT THE BUCCANEERS (2016: 9-7, 2nd in NFC South): Gerald McCoy wasn’t overly concerned about his teammates answering the bell on Sunday, even though it would mark 31 days between games for most of the starters.
Glennon was far from the only reason the Bears lost on Sunday, and he did show in the fourth quarter why the team has confidence in his abilities. The Bears need to announce a quarterback change Monday, from Glennon to Trubisky, an inevitability the Bucs debacle merely accelerated. He doesn’t have a top-flight arm or mobility to extend plays.
The Bears were outscored 26-0 in the first two quarters which essentially sealed the game at half time.
Glennon struggled with an offense in flux. On the replay, Sims was covered by three defenders and needed the throw to be flawless for him to even have a chance of making the play. They laid out the blueprint for beating him.
John Fox is not about to make a quarterback switch despite Mike Glennon’s dud on Sunday against Tampa Bay.
“Basically, not a good day at the office”, Bears coach John Fox said.
Do Pace and Fox have this team pointed in the right direction?
So, no Trubisky yet, but he will eventually see the field if Glennon keeps playing terribly. They have lost wide receivers faster than they can replace them. After all, Pace is just as responsible for giving Glennon $18.5 million guaranteed as he is trading up to get Trubisky, even if the latter move will ultimately have a much larger impact on his job security.
