Dustin Johnson claims number one ranking with Genesis Open win

February 20 08:13 2017

Eleven players spent the back nine Sunday afternoon, the last stage of the Genesis Open’s golf marathon, within a shot or two of second place.

The win meant that Johnson was won at least one tournament for at least ten seasons in a row. Johnson is informed midway through the final round that he has been penalised one stroke for his golf ball moving on the fifth green.

Jhonattan Vegas did play 14 holes, went 3 under par, and with his 4-under 67 Thursday at Riviera Country Club was at 7 under, moving into a tie with Saunders, who on Thursday had a 7-under 64.

Johnson effectively put the tournament away when he birdied the final three holes of the third round, and then added two more starting the final round as he threatened the tournament record low score. I don’t think the fairways are going to be much of a problem. I knew I was going to hit a lot of bad shots… So we finished and I get to go home and rest now… “It’s a great honor”.

“I was expecting to come in here this morning and maybe not even be able to play”.

In an event that saw Martin Laird claim his fourth top-10 finish in eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, Johnson toppled Jason Day in style.

Jordan Spieth, among the early leaders but finishing Sunday with a group at 6-under 278, could appreciate what Johnson accomplished.

Seattle native Fred Couples won the Chubb Classic on Sunday for his 12th PGA Tour Champions title and first since 2014, rallying to beat Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain at TwinEagles.

“It sounds good”, said Johnson of his elevation to World No.1. I’m seeing the lines really well and I feel like I’ve got a pretty good touch on the greens right now.

It’s no surprise to Johnson’s competitors that he’s now on top.

Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose continued his fine 2017 form with yet another top-5 finish. “He just moves differently to anyone else”. Even par, if you had to give me that at the start. “He’s going to be very hard to overcome”.

Day had reigned for the past 47 weeks and for a total of 51 weeks.

DJ is not a 20-something but he is a lead dog of this post-Tiger era and now, after a dominating win at one of the Tour’s premier events, he’s the No. 1 player in the world.

“Then we got in and I said, look, it’s getting too risky out here and we said it is pretty unsafe out there. I don’t care how many golf tournaments you win, nobody’s going to compete in the terms of doing what he did for the game”.
