European Union offers pre-Brexit trade talks

In her letter to Tusk formally giving notice to leave on Wednesday, May on several occasions said the talks on a new trade deal could happen while the exit negotiations happened.

What about future ties on security?

Speaking to reporters in Malta, Mr Tusk said the 27 would proceed in a “spirit of co-operation”. This is why I rule out this kind of interpretation. that security cooperation is used as a bargaining chip.

Mrs May’s letter had been interpreted by some as threatening to withdraw co-operation with the European Union on security matters. It should be out in two years. The EU’s draft guidelines for Brexit are uncompromising and firm.

Gone are the words of sadness and regret at Britain’s departure.

“We already miss you”.

The guidelines will be a framework for the talks led by the European Union and British negotiators and are due to be endorsed by the 27 remaining member states at a summit in late April.

The guidelines foresee the need for transitional arrangements after Brexit but insist they “must be clearly defined, limited in time, and subject to effective enforcement mechanisms”.

Sergei Stanishev, former Bulgarian prime minister and president of the party of European Socialists in the European parliament, added: “I am concerned about the tone of Theresa May’s notification letter”.

Muscat underlined that EU’s chief Brexit negotiatior Michel Barnier is the only person that the United Kingdom will contact on the issue, while member states will keep having a “normal” relationship with the United Kingdom as long as it remains a member.
