Evans rallies Virginia Tech to 34-31 victory over Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish (4-6) need to win their final two games to become bowl eligible and avoid becoming just the 14th team in 128 years of Notre Dame football to post a losing record.

“Awfully proud of our football game today”.

But. we’re going to try. “A pretty special celebration of college football”.

Virginia Tech’s WR-WR-TE trio of Isaiah Ford, Cam Phillips, and Bucky Hodges have combined over three seasons (the Irish trio had two) to dwarf that total, registering a stunning 5,963 yards during their time together in Blacksburg. They can clinch an ACC Coastal Division title next week with a win over rival Virginia, but this week’s focus will be building momentum and showing that the loss to the Yellow Jackets was merely an aberration. “I think that there’s definitely an opportunity, once again, to possibly play at the next level”.

“We know we’re more than capable of doing of what we do with the high-powered offense, so you don’t lose confidence easily when you’ve got that type of talent”, he said. No one knows for sure whether this call had that big of an impact on the outcome of the game. A Justin Yoon field goal following a Virginia Tech fumble pushed the lead to double digits, as the Irish led the Hokies 10-0 after the first 15 minutes of play. He had returns of 34 and 36 yards in the first half.

Between Touchdown Jesus and The Golden Dome, “Rudy”, the Gipper and all the history of Notre Dame Stadium, there are plenty of reasons for Virginia Tech to be in awe when it makes its first foray into one of college football’s hallowed grounds Saturday. “It’s just, we’ve got to play better”. “It was a tale of two halves”.

Also sweet: Evans’s numbers, despite an underperforming offense.

Virginia Tech quarterback, Jerod Evans did what every Notre Dame fan feared in the second half. Hunter has 38 catches for 521 yards and three scores. The past five years, Virginia Tech has gone 4-1 the week after facing Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson’s triple option, allowing just 18.4 points per game in those contests.

Notre Dame drives on everyone – cashing in with six rather than three is the challenge.

Notre Dame completed its 20th scoring drive of 75 or more yards this season during the third quarter, covering 78 yards on four plays in 1:24 after Adams broke free for a 67-yard touchdown rush. And Notre Dame, which had been on the verge of a 28-24 deficit, suddenly had a 31-21 lead.

So Kizer presumably gets to face USC next Saturday in Los Angeles in the regular-season finale after a schizophrenic performance against the Hokies (8-3). Sophomore wide receiver C.J. Even if it only wins one of the two and finishes 5-7, there’s no guarantee it would receive a waiver to play in a bowl because there are a handful of teams in similar situations with higher APR (Academic Progress Rate) scores. He leads the Irish, despite the team’s poor season, with 2,470 yards and 22 touchdowns with a 60 percent completion rate. “We played with an edge we hadn’t all year”. On the opening drive, Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer took the Irish offense down the field easily, and the drive was capped off with a 1-yard run by Josh Adams.

At Tech, Foster insisted the transition to defending the triple-option is much harder than getting back to the team’s base defense.
