They follow the debut in July 2015 of Discover Weekly, a personalised playlist for every Spotify user based on their listening habits, which is updated every Monday.
Fresh Finds is part of an ongoing expansion by Spotify into curation and discovery. The existing multi-genre Fresh Finds playlist will continue, but now there will also be separate playlists championing new hip hop, vocal pop, guitar driven, experimental and electronic music, updated each and every Wednesday. Select an artist, song or playlist in the app and it takes you back to Facebook Messenger with an option to share the photo of the cover art. When the recipient taps on that cover art they will be taken to the Spotify app where they can check out the music you just shared.
Spotify’s algorithm combines early buzz across blogs and music sites with billions of listening hours on Spotify, identifying the listening patterns of tastemakers that already uncover up and coming music.
Facebook has made it easier to share music while chatting by adding Spotify support directly to its Messenger app. Users can now share individual songs through the “more” tab within Messenger.
All six will be refreshed every Wednesday.
The story behind the story: The Fresh Finds playlists come amid a heated battle between Spotify and Apple Music for on-demand streaming supremacy. It’s an unparalleled, friction free way to find new music and I’ve discovered a lot of great bands I’d never even heard of there. The company trusts that whatever other popular new music these hipsters are listening to will make great fodder for First Finds playlists.
Fresh Finds continues that line of thinking, in a music-streaming battle that Spotify hopes will be as much about smart technology and recommendations as it is about exclusive deals with artists and heavy marketing – areas where it risks being outgunned by Apple.
