Facebook reports £4.07 billion revenue for last three months of 2015

An average of 1.04 billion people used Facebook daily in December in a 17 per cent rise from the same month the prior year. The growth was fueled by more people joining the world’s biggest social network, with more than 1.59 billion users logged on every month, especially on smartphones and tablets.

Facebook shares witnessed an increase of almost 12 percent in after-hours trading to $105.32 on Wednesday, after the company recently reported its earnings for the 2015 fourth quarter.

Its overall revenue for all of 2015 was $17.93 billion, which was an increase of 44 per cent on 2014.

Cheered by the strong quarter, Facebook’s investors sent the stock up to more than $106 on the news in after-hours trading as of 5:45 p.m. The stock closed at $94.45.

80 percent of revenue in the all ad segment came in from Mobile advertising compared to about 69 percent in the year-ago period.

The social media giant is hoping the additional choices will encourage people to share their thoughts more frequently and spend even longer periods on the social network than they already do.

Advertising revenue was $5.63 billion during the quarter, a 57% annual increase.

“It’s much stronger ad growth than we were expecting”, Evercore ISI analyst Ken Sena said.

The company, which has the world’s most popular smartphone app, has also been benefiting from a surge in video views that has attracted advertising dollars.

“It signifies the importance of what they’re providing to advertisers”, he said. And this figure was up more than 50% on past year.

The results mean that Facebook has now beaten analysts’ expectations for ten consecutive quarters.
