Fact check: Trump’s shaky claims on climate accord

European Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said Trump’s “announcement [to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement] has galvanized us rather than weakened us, and this vacuum will be filled by new broad committed leadership”.

President Donald Trump wants to stop contributing to the United Nations -managed Green Climate Fund, claiming that “nobody else is even close” to the $1 billion the US has paid so far.

Malloy said that CT is “a national leader in combatting climate change” and has no intention of slowing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But the leaders of France, Germany and Italy said in a joint statement that they “firmly believe” the deal can not be reworked.

But Trump would have to convince almost 200 other partners with whom the United States had fought and bartered for over two decades to get the 2015 Paris deal.

“I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris”, the president said, drawing support from members of his Republican party but trenchant criticism from world leaders, business executives and environmental activists.

German industry associations also criticised Trump’s decision to withdraw from the climate deal, warning that the move would harm the global economy and lead to market distortions. But he did not go as far as other mayors in resisting Trump’s decision; he declined to endorse his area Thursday to the Paris Agreement, The Miami Herald reported.

The British government issued a statement indicating Prime Minister Theresa May expressed her “disappointment” to Trump over his decision.

Germany’s environment minister, Barbara Hendricks, told reporters in Berlin that other countries will fill the leadership vacuum but none will be expected to make up the shortfall in emissions reductions caused by Washington’s exit. “As the former President of a clean energy company, I know how important these advancements are to our economy and to reversing our risky environmental course”, Mr Krishnamoorthi said.

In addition to this wave of protest, former United States President Barack Obama applauded the efforts of the administration to outthrow the decision made by the President.

The Green Fund is created to help poor countries adapt to climate change and bypass some of the heavily polluting technologies formerly used by rich countries.

The stand drew strong condemnation from leaders and environmentalists from across the world.

“And he doesn’t understand the Paris agreement“.

He said that the deal offered “the best chance we have” to save the planet. Trump also faced a backlash at home where Democratic state governors, city mayors and powerful companies drew up plans to meet the pact’s greenhouse gas emission targets.

“We must continue to resist global climate change through continuing our commitment to clean energy and other green technology”.

Trump on Thursday said he was formally withdrawing the US from the Paris climate deal, which includes almost 200 nations.
