The American’s overall lead over Gut was reduced to 23 points, while in the super-G rankings she holds a 79-point lead on the Swiss with three races remaining in the discipline this season.
Despite losing her cool on Friday and posting a video of her destroying her ski binding (with a hammer) that caused her to crash in the last race, the weight of Vonn’s accomplishment can not be denied.
Apologizing for a gaffe on social media, Lindsey Vonn had little to celebrate after clinching a record 20th World Cup crystal globe title Saturday.
While more downhill races are scheduled for this season, no skier will be able to touch Vonn’s lead.
“It was very different yesterday from today”, she said.
After erasing the post from her Facebook page, Vonn spent the night drafting an apology with her Los Angeles-based agent and called Johan Eliasch, chairman of the Head group that supplies the American’s equipment.
It was a first World Cup win of the season for the 26-year-old who set the standard early at 1 minute and 17.73 seconds, challenging the likes of Lara Gut and Lindsey Vonn to go faster.
“I’m really confused at how this happened”. “It’s going to be a technical super G and I like it”.
Stenmark won 19 during his storied career from 1975 to 1984.
Switzerland’s Lara Gut, Friday’s downhill victor, finished 11th and surrendered the overall World Cup Lead to Vonn by 43 points.
‘The video was posted on social media to express my emotions but I understand how it could be misinterpreted, ‘ Vonn said. I’m psyched for her, and happy for the Italians who did so well in their home country!
Saturday’s downhill victor Nadia Fanchini and Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany were among those who didn’t finish. The Italian has also won two medals in downhill at world championships – silver in 2013 and bronze in 2009.
“It feels really good, especially after all my injuries, to be able to win globes again is really nice and of course, downhill’s always been my favorite discipline, so this title means a lot to me”, Vonn said. “And to do it in front of my fans is extra special”.
The women’s circuit then travels to Soldeu, Andorra, for a super-G and Alpine combined next weekend.
