In its first official response to Trump’s demand that they pay for a wall across the border, Treasury Secretary Luis Videgaray told the news organization, Milenio, that the mogul shouldn’t expect “a single peso“.

“Under no circumstance Mexico will pay for the wall that Mr. Trump is proposing”. “Building a wall between Mexico and the United States is an appalling idea based on ignorance, which has no basis on the reality of the integration of North America”.

Since announcing his intention to run for USA president, Trump’s degrading remarks toward Mexico have been strongly criticized in Mexico but President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration has tried to avoid confrontation with the billionaire real estate mogul.

Former Mexican presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon have publicly condemned Trump, both comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

“But it’s a Trump wall so I will get the wall in under budget”, he said.

Trump estimates the wall will cost about $8 billion to build and says the Mexican government must assume responsibility for the cost.

Reuters reports that while illegal immigrants say they are concerned about a possible Trump presidency, the US remains a better alternative their countries of origin.

When asked about the possibility that Trump could become the next president of the United States, Videgaray said the Mexican government has always kept the doors open to dialogue with the White House and said Trump would not be the exception.

Mexico plans to use its extensive network of U.S. consulates to highlight the benefits of U.S.-Mexican relations to the U.S. economy and the American people, Guzman said. “He should pay for it”, Fox told Fusion’s Jorge Ramos in an interview last week.

Trump is leading the Republican presidential contenders and has used especially tough talk on immigration.

Mexico’s answer until now had been to remind Americans of the economic contributions made by their citizens and Mexican-Americans.

Videgaray stressed that same point on Wednesday, noting that “every minute, more than $1 million-worth of trade crosses the border”.
