Now with the Costa Rica loss, the U.S. sit at the bottom of the qualifying standings with zero points and a -5 goal differential.

Now the United States goes in Costa Rica tonight for a seemingly vital away qualifier.

The U.S. have collected zero points from the first two Hex round matches, something previously only accomplished by Trinidad & Tobago. Up front is where things will get very interesting for the United States, after having Jozy and Bobby Wood combine so well against Mexico.

With Matchday 2 of the Hex on the horizon, the U.S. Men’s National Team had a intensive couple days of training in preparation for another tough test Tuesday night in Costa Rica. “It has just not been good enough this week, we all understand that and come March there is going to be the need to go after things in a strong way so we can start to put things right”.

It was also likely the most embarrassing qualifying game the US has played since 1980, with Costa Rica peppering American goalkeeper Brad Guzan with nine shots on goal.

US coach Jurgen Klinsmann stayed with basically the same starting lineup against Costa Rica that opened Friday’s 2-1 loss to Mexico but switched to a conventional 4-4-2 formation. It would give the flanks more cover to deal with Costa Rica’s quality on the flanks, while also giving the USA some fullbacks who can get forward and overload Costa Rica’s defensive flanks as well. “There’s obviously some concern”.

Perhaps more troubling, some observers questioned whether the players had lost faith in Klinsmann and his system.

Costa Rica head the table with six points, followed by Mexico and Panama with four, and then Honduras on three.

He insisted he is the right person to lead the team.

“At moments like this it does you no good to point fingers and to be looking around trying to figure out who you can throw under the bus”, Bradley said. The top three finishers in the round-robin tournament qualify automatically for Russian Federation, while the fourth-placed side enters a playoff. After finding the CB combo with Brooks and Cameron, with Johnson and Yedlin as the backs, Klinsmann went away from everything due to Cameron missing due to injury and Timmy Chandler regaining his form in the Bundesliga. “So anybody who thinks that is sorely mistaken”.

Tim Chandler was at right back, John Brooks and Omar Gonzalez in central defense, and Matt Besler at left back.

Klinsmann stood up for his 23-year-old center back, saying it would be too easy to blame him for the mistakes made across the board.

Brian McBride was quite disappointed with the USMNT’s lack of fight and work ethic against Costa Rica.

Rather than taking the US forward to become a major power capable of asserting itself on the world stage, he had presided over a 4-0 defeat more in keeping with the dark years in which even reaching the World Cup was a challenge.

Ronald Matarrita created the final two goals by Campbell. He was taking a goal kick when he pulled up lame. He was a step behind all night on the slick, chunked-up turf. Their 4-0 victory over Costa Rica in the group stage of June’s Copa America Centenario was the most lopsided result in the history of the series.

The site shifted in 2013 to Estadio Nacional, which opened two years earlier and has an athletics track around the field. Let’s not skip past the fantastic ball from Bryan Ruiz, either.

Costa Rica, a 2014 World Cup quarterfinalist, almost went ahead in the 14th minute when Bolanos centered for Ruiz, who chested the ball and sent an overhead kick directly into Guzan’s face.

While Bolanos repeatedly sliced diagonal long balls through the midfield, the US rarely threatened.

US lineup: Guzan; Chandler, Gonzalez, Brooks, Besler; Johnson (Zusi 77th), Jones (Kljestan 71st), Bradley, Pulisic (Gooch 70th); Wood, Altidore.

It looked as if the Americans would get on the scoreboard first when Bobby Wood dribbled into the penalty area and delivered a beautifully placed cross in front of the net, but there was nobody there to knock it in.
