In the two previous years, Pittsburgh results showed that the live-attenuated influenza vaccine – the nasal-mist vaccine for children known as FluMist – lacked effectiveness against H1N1, an A-strain virus that’s been the predominant strain in recent years. About 15 percent of those vaccinated a year ago opted for the nasal spray vaccine over the syringe.

Mayo Clinic Health System also opened its flu vaccine clinics as well. However, the yearly vaccines also offer no protection against pandemic flu.

“It’s not true and it is a common myth and misconception”, Anderson said. No appointment is necessary.

It’s that time of year again.

“We’re prepared to give as many as 2,000 free shots on October 20″, department spokesman Kevin Hall said.

“We really still encourage good hand hygiene and staying home from work and school when you’re sick”, Martin said.

Get your flu vaccine – an annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances you will get the flu and lessen the chance that you will spread it to others. The vaccine won’t harm you or your baby.

“Everybody aged six months and older needs to get the flu vaccine”, Scioto Couth Health Department Nursing Director Ruth Montavon said. The flu shot can not cause the flu due to the fact there are no live viruses in the shot.

Experts say folks in cities are at a higher risk, more people, more germs.

Judy Smith of the Cohen Health Center stressed the importance of getting vaccinated this year. Vaccinations among people age 50 and older decreased by more than 3 percent. Does that mean we’re in for an early flu season?

It’s important that people have their flu vaccine every year, as it protects against different strains of flu which change and evolve each year. In any case, it takes about two weeks to build up immunity. Young children are more susceptible to flu and its complications, but aside from reducing the likelihood of youngsters catching the condition, vaccination can also help reduce them spreading it to more vulnerable members of their family.

“A lot of people say, ‘I never got the vaccine and I never got the flu, so I don’t need it, ‘” Grohskopf said.

Most pharmacies, physicians and insurance companies follow the CDC recommended guidelines for vaccinations, he said.

“Flu is tricky”, said Dr. Stacey Gorski, a biology professor at University of Sciences who specializes in immunology and vaccinology. If symptoms get worse or you have a chronic medical condition, Anderson said, it’s time to go to the doctor.

The vaccines will be provided at the Charlottesville/Albemarle, Louisa, Nelson, Fluvanna, Nelson and Greene County health departments in Charlottesville, Louisa, Arrington, Palmyra and Stanardsville, respectively.

Getting the flu can be very serious and can have serious medical complications, hospitalizations, and even death.

Federal health officials have noted that fewer older adults have been getting vaccinated each year.

During the 2014-2015 flu season, 273 patients were tested positive for the flu, and over half of those patients were admitted to the hospital.

Every y on the back ear influenza kills almost 36,000 people in the U.S., and this is regarded to be the most lethal illnesses.
