We are talking about ex-Twitter executive Kevin Weil, who is reportedly joining photo-sharing app Instagram as head of product soon.
Weil announced his departure from Twitter on Sunday night.
For Twitter, the move means yet another position to fill for Dorsey and his team, who are holding a retreat in San Francisco this week where a head of marketing and a head of PR are expected to be announced. The latter two were employed at the micro-blogging company for more than five years.
Weil will report directly to Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom, reports Bloomberg. But as per the SEC filing, Mr. Weil and Mr. Roetter, both have to serve the company till January 29, and February 4, respectively. In a similar vein, Skip Schipper, vice president for human resources, is also set to leave the company.
Sunday was a somewhat embarrassing day for Twitter, as a bunch of its executives quit the company en mass. Now, to add insult to injury, one of them seems to have departed for the company’s biggest competitor. This lends credence to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s statement that, contrary to multiple reports, Weil and the other execs who left the company were not fired. Jack Dorsey’s foremost task for the next few weeks will be to reorganize Twitter’s leadership team and rekindle optimism about Twitter’s future.
An Instagram spokesperson declined to comment. Such event may also be the reason why sources inside Twitter say Weil’s duties were cut back following the series of employee layoffs in October 2015. Weil has been with Twitter since 2009.
Currently, Twitter has approximately 320 million active users; while Instagram has exceeded over 400 million users till date.
The new recruits will be working for Clay Bavor, Google’s vice president for product management, who is now exclusively overseeing the company’s virtual reality push following a restructuring last week.
