June 3 is National Doughnut Day, which means your favorite bakeries and coffee shops will be serving up some pretty sweet deals on the sugary rings. All donations will support programs right here at home.
If you’re like me, you might wonder how National Donut Day started.
During World War I, in an effort to provide some of the comforts of home, female volunteers and Salvation Army officers set up huts near the front lines and provided warm meals, clothes mending services, postage stamps and writing supplies, and homemade treats for the United States soldiers. The Salvation Army still serves doughnuts, in addition to warm meals and hydration, to those in need during times of disaster.
The first celebrated Doughnut Day was held in Chicago in 1938 to help raise funds during the Great Depression and commemorate the work of the “Doughnut Lassies”.
Honey Dew Donuts: This doughnut shop from MA is offering free doughnuts with every purchase. Pre-orders will be distributed at Salvation Army canteens outside the store. Two of them – Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance – began frying doughnuts in an overturned steel helmet, according to the release.
Last year, 30 million Americans received assistance from The Salvation Army’s 3,500 officers, 63,000 employees and 3.3 million volunteers.
