That seemed to happen for Dwyane Wade before Game 7 between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets. Hornets guard Kemba Walker, who had 37 points against Miami on Friday, was held to nine points on 3-for-16 shooting.
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra and Hornet head man Steve Clifford both come from the Pat Riley family tree, which means they’ve done all they can within un-fineable reason to attempt to sway things both through the media and off the record.
Before Sunday, the Heat’s most recent game seven was in 2013, when they beat the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Finals.
Sunday was an unfitting ending for what had been an awesome bounceback season for the Hornets that saw them revolutionize their offense and become one of the most fun teams in the league to watch.
“Sometimes, it’s better not to wake up a sleeping giant”, Heat rookie Josh Richardson said to the Miami Herald after the game.
Kemba Walker did everything he could to propel the Hornets to the second round in Game 6.
In the first round in 2014, he made plenty of big plays to push the Nets past the Raptors, in a Game 7 on the road: 26 points on 11-of-25 shooting.
The Hornets never had a chance in Game 7.
The two teams will now turn to Game 7 in Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. While they were out hustled on the boards in Game 6, they won that battle in Games 3,4 and 5 and it showed on the scoreboards. It’s a privilege to be in a competitive series like this with an opponent that’s challenging you.
After crushing the Magic in the first round, the Heat dropped their series opener against the Knicks and fell behind 3-1.
While Deason is sure of his innocence, some of Wade’s teammates weren’t so sure that he didn’t have a part to play in Wade’s big night.
He’s scored 33, 28 and 39 there in this series, with defense.
Toronto’s Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, meanwhile, have not exactly played like All-Star guards.
To illustrate this point, it is easy to point out the Heat’s first two victories where they scored 123 and 115 points respectively.
“It’s like our Super Bowl, win or go home”, Lowry said. It was a throwback performance for one of the game’s best closers. “And then in the third quarter, it got away from us”. “Gotta win. Gotta win”.
“We’ll respond like we’re supposed to”.
“It’s obviously been better, but you don’t get these opportunities very often, so if I can help in any way”, he said.
