Georginio Wijnaldum: Liverpool players put too much pressure on themselves

February 13 09:58 2017

“We can’t waste time thinking too much about this”.

Liverpool finally registered their first win of 2017 in the Premier League as they defeated Tottenham 2-0 as Sadio Mane, who Liverpool had been clearly missing since he went to play in the AFCON, scored two goals in quick succession in the first half to give Liverpool all three points.

Liverpool’s 2-0 win saw them rise into fourth back above Manchester United and ahead of Manchester City – although Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

“For different reasons that we need to analyse, the team, collectively, didn’t show”.

Similarly to bitter rivals Arsenal when they moved to the Emirates Stadium, there will be a bedding in period for Spurs and some financial difficulties along the way, and Wilson believes that will determine how far they go in the more immediate future.

“I can really understand why a few people were angry about us because it’s not easy to understand – but we really try”, Klopp told talkSPORT.

“We are hurting from every poor performance and every bad result“.

Liverpool were applying ferocious pressure and Mane almost completed his hat-trick in the 21st minute as he found himself one-on-one with Lloris, but this time he hit the side netting.

He added: “We need to show more“. Second half we reached their level but it is really late.

“Of course you know if you have poor results it is more hard to win the title but we still have second, third, fourth place and we must finish as high as possible at the end of the season”.

“If you start the game how we started it’s too hard”.

Asked if it was a chance to knock Liverpool out of the title race for good, Pochettino said: “I’m thinking only of the top of the table”.

“We never coped with the tempo of their game”.

“The whole team were poor”.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been on a brilliant run in recent weeks in the Premier League since losing 1-0 to Manchester United in December and are now on a nine game unbeaten run which has seen them turn into the closest challengers to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side. He could be seen in the centre circle producing the most passionate fist pumps we’ve ever seen.

“We need to focus on the Europa League and the FA Cup before our next league game”. It’s true that Chelsea have the nine-point gap right now but in the Premier League anything can happen.
