Giants sign outfielder Denard Span to three-year deal

January 08 03:21 2016

The San Francisco Giants continue their jam-packed offseason, this time signing veteran center fielder Denard Span to a three-year $31 million contract with incentives. It is surprising that, despite playing in under 65 games last season, that the soon-to-be 32-year-old outfielder managed to get a three-year deal.

Span, 31, was among the lower-tiered outfielders in a deep market after coming off hip and core injuries and being limited to a career-low 61 games in 2015 when he hit. He could have trouble in the spacious center field of AT&T Park, but would likely excel as a left fielder. He was with the Minnesota Twins for five years before going to the Nationals in 2013. 301 with 11 stolen bases and 38 runs scores. Gregor Blanco becomes the fourth outfielder and could spell both players in addition to right fielder Hunter Pence.

The Giants could announce the signing as soon as tomorrow, so stay tuned for the official financial details of Span’s contract. His two hits in Game Three of the National League Division Series gave the Nationals their only win from the lead off spot in the lineup.

The Giants look to be especially strong up the middle, with catcher Buster Posey, Crawford and Joe Panik on the infield and Span in center. The team has Angel Pagan – who has struggled with his own injuries in recent seasons – under contract for 2016.

The Giants certainly haven’t been shy about spending money this offseason.

The San Francisco Giants have filled their void in the outfield with veteran Denard Span.

With Span now in the fold, the Giants have a multitude of options to use in the outfield.
