The American Heart Association has declared Friday National Wear Red Day to raise women’s awareness of their heart health. “Down in here, this is where it would just erupt”, she said pointing to her jaw.

And show your heart some love year-round by actively adopting heart-healthy habits and spreading the word. She says a heart attack or stroke can happen to anybody at any age.

Employees at St. Rita’s were decked out in red this afternoon as a way to recognize National Wear Red Day. When women make lifestyle changes and understand their heart risks, they help protect themselves against not just heart disease but all diseases. The event was held at the Physicians Regional Medical Center.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and strokes kills one woman every 80 seconds.

Doctors, survivors and organization representatives gathered to kick-off the Go Red for Women Campaign.

Norris said education can drastically cut down the number of stroke and heart disease cases by 80 percent. State and local governments, communities, health professionals and families can all work together to create healthy places for New Mexicans to live, work, and play.

“Heart disease is the #1 killer of women”, Caroline Calderone Baisley, Director of Health, said in a statement.

Tips will also be given on how to dine out and make heart healthy choices, how to choose healthy portion sizes and cooking tips and recipes will be given to home chefs. Right now, even the Virginia General Assembly is getting involved with a bill designating the first Friday in February as “Wear Red Day in Virginia”.

Many came to the kick off celebration including Governor Bill Haslam.
