Golden Globes to offer a galaxy of stars, if not the Force

January 10 20:01 2016

The British comedian returns to host the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, and it’s no secret he’ll be stirring the pot.

Hollywood’s biggest stars turn out on Sunday for the Golden Globes, which kick off the industry’s awards season this year with a show that promises suspense and cheeky humor.

In the best foreign movie category, four European films and one from Latin American are vying for an award, including Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul”, and “Mustang”, a French production about the life of subjugation of five Turkish sisters. With Bryan Cranston, Michael Fassbender,Will Smith,Eddie Redmayne and Leo nominated, how can we choose?!

So else can you expect from this Sunday’s Golden Globes telecast? “Carol” star Cate Blanchett will contend against co-star Rooney Mara for best drama actress, as well as Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”), Brie Larson (“Room“), and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl“).

Up for Best Motion Picture – Drama are Carol, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight.

Willingness to sing for one’s Wolfgang Puck-catered supper, offering the occasional showstopping number to help get us through the tech categories.

Dame Maggie Smith is nominated in the best actress in a comedy or musical category for her cantankerous role in The Lady In The Van while her Downton Abbey co-star Joanne Froggatt is nominated for best supporting actress in a series, limited series or TV movie for her role as Anna Bates in the period drama.

The Revenant” could bring home a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, but it has an uphill battle. Most categories do not have an obvious frontrunner, and with a take-no-prisoners host like Ricky Gervais guiding the show, anything could happen on Saturday night. A surprise, perhaps, on that list, is Ridley Scott’s “The Martian“, which stars Matt Damon as a scientist-astronaut marooned on the Red Planet. The musical/comedy victor has won seven times at the Oscars, including each of the first three years.

After a 10-year ratings high three years ago, the Golden Globes’ viewership has dipped slightly since, with an audience of 19.3 million tuning in last year. The Globes have instead grown into one of the most popular award show broadcasts of the year, thanks to increasingly credible nominees, its trademark relaxed atmosphere and its unique position as a major awards show that honors both film and television.

The singer, who is nominated for best original song for his single Writing’s On The Wall from the James Bond film Spectre, opted for a classic black tuxedo, while Ricky added a pair of mirrored sunglasses. Her opponents are Viola Davis, Eva Green, Taraji Henson, and Robin Wright.

And lastly, for lead actress for television comedy series it should go to Lily Tomlin for “Grace and Frankie“, who’s competing with Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Louis Dreyfus, and Gina Rodriguez.
