Gophers dismiss Carlos Morris from team

February 18 23:35 2016

The team took the lead back to secure its first conference win.

It was the second loss in a row for Maryland (22-5, 10-4), whose Rasheed Sulaimon scored a season-high 28 points. Melo Trimble had 10 points on three-for-11 shooting and the Terrapins turned the ball over 15 times.

Nate Mason led Minnesota (7-19, 1-13) with 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. The Golden Gophers, who entered 0-13 in league play and a college basketball laughingstock, shocked the Terps at Williams Arena.

But for the first time in more than two months, Minnesota wasn’t done. “It was awesome to see everybody get that feeling again”. There figured to be something wrong when Morris received only four minutes of playing time against Iowa on Saturday after starting 16 games for the Gophers this season, and now it is quite clear that there was substantial conflict between Morris and the Minnesota coaching staff. The senior will finish his final season of eligibility with a season average of 9.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Using its speed to keep the much-bigger Maryland off balance, Minnesota got a pair of back-to-back transition scores off of steals to push its lead to 48-36 with 12:31 left, sending the sparse but ecstatic crowd into a frenzy.

“You have to be man enough to know when you’re wrong, and work on to improving that, individually and collectively as a team”, Sulaimon said.

With two games on the slate, we made sure to capture all the best moments. “We’ve got all the talent in the world, but, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”.

The first “Over-rated!” chants started to ring around the 10-minute mark, and that’s when Sulaimon got going.

Maryland led 60-59 with 3 minutes to play, but King, Mason and Murphy hit free throws down the stretch to hold off the Terrapins.

“I can start going inside to Starbucks instead of going through the drive-thru”.

Stone was third on the team with 12.8 points per game, and the Terrapins could have used his 6-foot-11 size and presence inside. Trimble is 4 for 25 in his last two games. “It’s my job, it’s what I get paid to do. Hopefully I can do it by Sunday at one o’clock [against Michigan]”, Turgeon said.

Both teams shot less than 40 percent from the floor, but the biggest difference in the game came from the free-throw line, where Minnesota hit 20 of 23 attempts, while Maryland connected on just 14 of 19.

Maryland: Jake Layman was the only other Terrapin in double figures with 11 points…. Carter was just 3-of-12 from the field and finished with eight points.
