The new Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer has captivated the nation, with hordes of citizens now trying to get Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey released from prison.
Dassey was arrested at the age of 16 in connection with case, but his attorneys maintain his confession was coerced.
The threatening emails to Katz and the records requests aren’t the only signs that “Making a Murderer“, 10 years in the making, has gripped the public imagination and inflamed passionate feelings. “This was a six week trial, and there were hundreds of pieces of evidence”, says Bellin.
It says, Earl admitted to driving his golf cart past Halbach’s vehicle where it was found on the salvage yard, and told police that he is willing to give “any information incriminating to Steven, saying that ‘even if my brother did something, I would tell'”.
That case was settled in 2006 for about $400,000.
But what the found vial shows, Buting said, is that Avery’s blood would have been available to someone who wanted to frame him in Halbach’s death.
ID isn’t the only network planning a special about Avery’s case. The series puts the justice system into question- more specifically in the state of Wisconsin.
The documentary has been met with great acclaim, and has attracted many to Avery’s case. The engrossing show revisits both trials, and-without spoiling any of the plot-effectively manages to cast doubt on the judicial competence and rectitude of Wisconsin’s Manitowoc County. While Steven Avery had been a suspect from the start, he is now claiming to believe that the crime might have been committed by one of his two brothers. “A lot of times, it’s attached to a report if there’s a report on it”, Hermann said.
His defense attorneys are now Internet heartthrobs.
“I walked into the jury room for the first four hours of deliberation and one of the gentlemen had his arms crossed, and he said to me, ‘He’s guilty as hell.’ And I thought to myself, ‘How can this be?”
