Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band dies at age 69

The Allman Brothers Band performs “Whipping Post” in 2014 for All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs And Voice of Gregg Allman. The group soon moved to Macon, Georgia where they developed a sound that helped define Southern rock. Then he re-tuned the guitar to an open tuning, took out a pouch with metal fingerpicks (which he put on) and showed me the riff, talking the whole time about how he was inspired to play in such a manner by Tim Buckley. Gregg had cancelled many 2016 shows and all 2017 performances due to illness.

Newsworthy enough to have left an impression on a young boy from Virginia whose best friend was already that Rock and Roll sound despite being a full 8 or nine years out from buying my first Allman Brothers LP (Fillmore East of course).

Music legend and the king of Southern rock Gregg Allman has passed away aged 69. Diagnose with hepatitis C in 1999, he underwent a liver transplant in 2010. Low Country Blues, his sixth solo studio recording, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best blues album in 2011.

The extent of the band’s influence is beyond measure.

Born in 1947 in Tennessee, Mr. Allman’s upbringing was a hardscrabble one split between Nashville and Daytona, Florida.

Allman was just 69 at the time of his death.

Leading the tributes on social media the singer said ‘words are impossible.’ Former Beatles singer Ringo Starr also posted a message paying tribute to Allman.

Together they released a widely panned duets album under the name “Allman and Woman”.

Greg Allman died peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia, according to a statement on his website. “I thought that was the hippest thing I’d ever seen”. “I don’t know where he stuffs it”.

“A morkie, I think”. “Broken heart. Gregg Allman I will miss you”, she wrote.

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth-sailing.

He chuckled. “I used to have giant dogs, even a St. Bernard once”.

Raised by a single mother after his father was shot to death, he idolized his guitar-slinging older brother Duane and became his musical partner. I have no other words that can temper or lessen the pain that you must be feeling today. We’re always looking for a damn singer or I’m having to do it.

“I was shocked because I listen to him on the radio all the time”, said Guyton resident Lisa Tomasello. “You’ve been swallowed up by something you love, you know, and you’re just totally engulfed”.

Charlie Starr makes no bones about it: His band, Blackberry Smoke, wouldn’t exist without the Allman Brothers Band. Do you remember listening to their music?

Allman said he was most impressed by the latter fact.

“‘People have said to me, “Does whiskey and cigarettes have anything to do with the tone and quality of your voice?” There are only four in this group and without mentioning the other three I will say that it’s Melissa that starts the waterworks.

“I never believed in God until this”, he said in an interview with The Associated Press in 1998. “Even in the ’80s, when I was playing awful gigs for no money in front of no one in the middle of nowhere”.

“The family will release a statement soon, but for now ask for privacy during this very hard time”, the statement on his website advised.
