Guest view: Improve, don’t repeal, Obamacare

December 06 23:01 2016

The faster growth in 2014 and 2015 came as the Affordable Care Act expanded health insurance coverage for individuals through Medicaid and marketplace insurance plans.

But the Republican leader wouldn’t commit on a timeline – or an exact replacement. Much more can be done to make health insurance affordable and accessible to all Americans. That’s our vision, and step one in accomplishing it: Repeal Obamacare. In particular, the most important story of the week – seriously, people, stop focusing on Trump Twitter – was the selection of Tom Price, an ardent opponent of Obamacare and advocate of Medicare privatization, as secretary of health and human services. She worked closely with officials in IN (including Vice President-elect Mike Pence) on that state’s ACA Medicaid expansion.”Dr. Price has been a leader in the development of health policies to advance patient choice and market-based solutions as well as reduce excessive regulatory burdens that diminish time devoted to patient care and increase costs“.

Those who sign up for coverage before December 15 will enjoy health insurance starting January 1. However, what is clear is that with most chips stacked in the Republicans favor over the coming years, it is unlikely that they will miss the opportunity to initiate the post-Obamacare era in some shape or form. With a Trump administration and Republican-controlled Congress assuming power in 2017, GOP leadership is faced with the reality of Obamacare’s repeal and finding a workable alternative. This is a mistake.

Many of its clients get healthcare thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

A 2015 report from The Century Foundation, a progressive nonpartisan think tank based in NY, had some good suggestions that deserve another look.

“Employees need to consider not only the payroll costs of premiums but also the costs associated with the benefit plan design such as deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance and out-of-pocket limits”. Forcing Americans to buy a policy that some can’t afford and others don’t want – or pay a penalty – is fundamentally wrong. Floridians understand the importance and value of having health insurance, and they are taking action to obtain coverage.

Nearly eight and a half million white Americans make up the educated working class of American society. The main driver for the increased federal share of health care was the continued enrollment of newly eligible adults into Medicaid who were fully financed by the federal government. The New York Times reported that Carmeli voted for Trump despite the fact that she has Crohn’s disease and has relied on Obamacare to cover her extensive medical expenses.

The law includes popular provisions such as one allowing young people to stay on their parents’ insurance until they turn 26. They’ve formed a seamless plan to repeal immediately without a replacement in sight, with the actual ACA end date effective in several years. There’s a bit of confusion about how government assistance will work for people buying individual plans-Ryan’s “Better Way” healthcare proposal pegs the level of assistance to age alone, and not income (Obamacare plans consider both).
