This weekend, marches took place across the country regarding gun violence in the United States and protesting a lack of action to address it. Pardeep Kaleka, whose father and five others were fatally shot at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, in August 2012, also spoke. Some schools have expressed concerns about the idea, but he said they are pushing ahead with plans for students to gather and talk about their ideas. “We continue to see awful events that don’t result in thoughtful and substantive changes that make guns less” accessible to people who would use them to kill.

Numerous adults on the ballot this year have certainly failed to do anything about gun violence.

Hoffman said he is partly motivated because Parkland, home to the mass shooting that killed 17 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was developed by his company, WCI. Duta said the aftermath of a tragedy is unlike anything else. “The adults in the room have let you down”, she said. “As a student, you feel targeted by all the gun violence”.
“I just feel like we’re on our own”, she said. Adept at social media messaging and uncowed by the lies and threats used by the gunmakers and their allies to beat back any perceived threat to their economic bottom line, these high-schoolers have gone on the offensive.
Even then, President Trump could veto any bill that doesn’t have overwhelming legislative support, and given his abrupt turnaround on gun control after meeting with NRA lobbyists a few weeks ago, we’d say that’s pretty likely.
