Tyler Austin and Joe Kelly will probably get anywhere from 6-10 games, Austin for inciting the fight and Kelly for intentionally hitting Austin.
The game remains scoreless in the second inning.
A night after a wild melee marked the official return of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, Rick Porcello raised his arms and demanded silence.
But that’s not enough to restore the enormous amount of fun that once lived inside this bitter baseball rivalry. You know, sometimes in your slide it carries you, and I don’t know if there’s any carry-over from all the (Manny) Machado stuff (hurting Dustin Pedroia) past year, and they’re going to handle things a certain way now.
Well, it looks like it’s back.
Two pitches later, Kelly drilled Austin in the back, sparking a bench-clearing brawl. The brawl ended with Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martínez picking up Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer and throwing him to the ground.
Once Austin charged Kelly, though, punches flew and there was plenty of wrestling.
Kelly, Austin and Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin were ejected. Gray spurred warnings to both teams in the first inning when he nailed Hanley Ramirez on the right wrist with a fastball that wasn’t far off the plate. It is what it is.
At the very least, it showed there is a ton of heart left to go around that Yankee clubhouse.
Boone defended Austin’s slide after the game, saying he didn’t think it was “dirty”.
For as long as I can remember, there was always something explosive about a Yankees Red Sox game. Tyler Austin: the real people’s champ.
The other side believes it was dirty because Austin came in with his spikes up and appeared to hit Boston’s Brock Holt.
Consider the situation developing, both when it comes to Ramirez missing any games and if there are more batters hit with pitches in Fenway Park Thursday.
“I took exception, ” Cora said.
There’s a huge difference being a player’s manager (Boone) and being an antagonizer that gets his dirty work done through his players (Cora).
“But when you only have one pitch, that’s what’s going to happen”. The first was, let’s say, a heated discussion in the third inning, following a slide to second by the Yankees’ Tyler Austin.
