The House Freedom Caucus does not publish a listing of its members.
The Freedom Caucus, as well as the moderates (oddly not mentioned in the Trump tweet), that squashed the terribly written American Health Care Act (AHCA) quite possibly saved the Republicans an embarrassing defeat in the 2018 midterms. As a result of Americans’ growing realization that health insurance is a good thing to have, a majority of Congressional Republicans now believe the federal government should provide some level of subsidy to Americans who want to buy but can not afford health insurance (though the most conservative Republicans in the Freedom Caucus – a small but powerful minority – do not agree with providing subsidies).
The White House had no immediate comment in regards to Scavino’s tweet. Steve Mnuchin, his commerce secretary, said they were hoping for legislation by August.
After the House’s stunning failure to advance Ryan’s bill, different factions within the Republican Party spent the week finger-pointing.
In a tweet of his own on Thursday, the Idaho Republican wrote: “Freedom Caucus stood with u when others ran”.
So if you’re a conservative who flatly doesn’t want an expensive, comprehensive, government-funded health care program, there’s only one way to get there: ditch the pre-existing conditions ban by calling for an end to community rating.
Meanwhile, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-Texas), head of the Freedom Caucus, said conservatives would still play a major role in the tax debate. Emboldened Democrats, meanwhile, might see fit to stymie Trump’s agenda in the Senate, where Republicans lack the votes to overcome a filibuster. “We have never negotiated with the Freedom Caucus“.
Up in Washington, House Speaker Paul Ryan was making similar noises, warning his fellow Republicans that if they didn’t come up with a deal, President Trump might start making deals with the Democrats.
Tom Zawistowski of the Portage County TEA party says he objects to the us-vs. -them tone of the tweet. That’s the message to congressional Republicans from the leaders of several conservative groups on Friday.
“Trump admin & Establishment have merged into #Trumpstablishment“, Amash, a Tea Party favorite seeking a fourth term, tweeted Saturday in response to Scavino’s tweet. His ostensible target was the House Freedom Caucus, which declined to vote for the “Obamacare Lite” bill that Trump vigorously lobbied for. “Nearly everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment”.
“It’s very understandable. The president is frustrated that we haven’t gotten to where we need to go”.
Bozell also had a message for President Trump: “I also urge the president to rethink these attacks on The Freedom Caucus“.
But on Sunday, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus told Fox News, “I think the president is disappointed in the number of people he thought were loyal to him that weren’t”.
“It’s constructive in fifth grade – and it may allow a child to get his way – but that’s not how our government works”, Amash said.
