The New York Mets, Cespedes’ former team, now don’t have an offer on the table but have made it known to Cespedes and his agents that they would be willing to discuss a short term deal if he chooses to go in that direction.
The initial offer to Davis was reportedly for seven years and over $150 million.
A source at Roc Nation, agents for Cespedes, and involved in their pro boxing division, was able to confirm that negotiations reopened late Wednesday with Cespedes and the Mets organization.
It’s believed the Orioles have grown exhausted of Davis’ contract demands, the report said, and the team is closing the door on re-signing the slugger altogether. Could you imagine Davis and Cespedes in a lineup with Manny Machado and Adam Jones?
“It’s not as if we’re not looking to improve the team. and if possible, in significant ways”, general manager Sandy Alderson said last week when asked about potentially losing Cespedes. Originally signed by the Oakland Athletics prior to 2012, Cespedes spent two-and-a-half years with the A’s before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox at the 2014 MLB Trade Deadline.
A mark in Cespedes’ favor over another oft-mentioned free agent outfielder, Justin Upton, is that Cespedes is not tied to draft pick compensation, as Upton is.
There’s no doubting Cespedes’ talent – he has buckets of power, one of the best throwing arms in baseball and an above-average glove. Now before Mets fans get all their hopes up it is worth saying that it has also been reported that the Mets have not officially made Cespedes an offer but it seems as though the two sides are at least still talking.
It’s plausible given the slow market for this year that a one year deal might appeal to Cespedes because it would allow him to try again on the open market next year.
If the Tigers sign Fowler, he would start in left field while Cameron Maybin gets the nod in center. Splitting time between the Mets and the Detroit Tigers in 2015, Cespedes authored a slash-line of.291/.328/.542 with 35 home runs, 101 runs scored, and 105 RBI. Davis? He’s suddenly no longer in control, unless everything about the Cespedes offer is in order to put pressure on him to end his sorta holdout and sign the damn contract.
