The Jacksonville Jaguars made a decision to officially fire former head coach Gus Bradley shortly after the team blew a 20-8 lead to end up losing 21-20, moving their record for the 2016 season to 2-12. The Jags are just 2-12 this season, and Bradley posted just a 14-48 record in almost four seasons with the team.
At this year’s Meet Me at the 50 event at EverBank Field, local charity In the Pink benefited to the tune of $50,000.
Marrone said he will meet with players Tuesday for the first time as head coach.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan released a statement about the move, including a line about letting Bradley get home and spend time with his family during the holidays.
The Jaguars have not yet announced who will be replacing Bradley, but that individual certainly has his work cut out for him. Coughlin also maintains strong ties to the Jacksonville area through the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. He can take a job now, which would help the transition in terms of building a staff before other head coaches are hired.
The contrast between the two firings during the 2015 season couldn’t be more stark: Miami let go of Joe Philbin in Week 4, and handed the reigns to assistant Dan Campbell, who seemed to regain order in the aftermath of the Dolphins’ bullying scandal, but his 5-7 record wasn’t enough to pass on hiring the hot coordinator, Adam Gase.
Former San Francisco 49ers coach and current MI coach Jim Harbaugh, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley should get consideration, too.
Caldwell could give him a shot at getting back on the sideline. “Or at least you want to go out there and get a couple more wins?'” Berry said.
Marrone was asked if he considered the next two weeks an “on-the-job interview”.
Still, Coughlin turns 71 in August and was 19-29 in his final three seasons with the Giants. Remember, Shanahan designed the offense in Washington in which Robert Griffin III led the Redskins to the playoffs. Allowing Payton to relocate would save the organization $40 million in salary minus whatever a new head coach would be paid.
Interim situations are weird because oftentimes there’s a misleading bump in production following a coach being fired, leading to the belief that the interim coach is the right guy to run the show on a full-time basis. Perhaps he can bring some of the “Brady Effect” over to rejuvenate Bortles.
