How the 2016 NFL Salary Cap Affects the Panthers

March 01 01:00 2016

According to former agent and salary-cap expert Joel Corry, that leaves the Chiefs with about $32.55 million in cap room as of Monday.

How much cap space the Buffalo Bills will have when the 2016 NFL league year begins on March 9, however, is very much up in the air. Josh Lucas, Champ Kelly, our pro scouts Brad Obee and David Williams, they’ve done a great job of setting our UFA board, and now it’s just a matter of being smart and calculated with how we approach it because you know, free agency’s risky. The increase from $143 million per team last season – the biggest single-year boost since 2006 – was fueled by a flood of revenue from the new Thursday night TV package and other income that exceeded league projections.

The NFL Players Association was notified Friday that the 2016 salary cap had been set at $155.27 million.

Since the 10-year labor agreement was reached in 2011, the cap has risen more than $35 million per team. The Patriots have no major players hitting free agency and could create additional cap space either via extensions or contract restructures.

Ever since that first season, the cap space has consistently grown. That put another $50 million overall into the cap.

If the Washington Redskins decide to place the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins, it will cost them $19.95 million for 2016 under the values agreed upon by the National Football League and the players’ union.
