Minutes before the fire broke out, Amitabh Bachchan, Maharastra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackrey were present at the same venue where the fire broke out.
The show was part of an economic event, “Make in India”, created to encourage foreign investment. The whole stage where a cultural performance was going on gutted in fires.
VIPs including the state chief minister had to wave at them to stop.
The BMC said the fire could have been caused by an electric short-circuit.
Yesterday, Bachchan has posted on Twitter that he had attended rehearsals for the event and PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the “Make in India” week too.
“I was watching a dance performance when this happened, then suddenly the stage was engulfed by smoke”. 14 fire engines, 10 water tankers rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
Fadnavis said a comprehensive enquiry into the incident of fire will be conducted to ascertain the reason. Police and fire dept did a wonderful job in evacuating people.
According to an ANI report, the fire is now under control and the cultural event at Chowpatty has been cancelled. He said that there would be no change in the Make in India programme.
Kesarkar also said the recently formed Maharashtra State Innovation Council will have to take decisions that will be linked with startups. He was all praise for the disaster management team. It was due to wind that the blaze engulfed the stage.
Vivek Oberoi while speaking to a news channel praised the Mumbai Police, the organizers and the fire extinguisher department who handled the situation calmly and swiftly. Fadnavis while speaking to reporters said, ” It was an unfortunate incident, I have asked for a high level inquiry to fix the responsibility the cause.
