Hurts Leads No. 1 Alabama’s 51-3 Rout of Mississippi State

November 15 03:55 2016

The freshman quarterback was magnificent in the Crimson Tide’s blowout win over Mississippi State on Saturday.

For a recap of the game, see Sunday’s Starkville Daily News. Hurts has run for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The problem: Alabama has won 78 of 99 games in the series and Mullen has never beaten Alabama.

From game one, Jalen Hurts and ArDarius Stewart have been on the same page for the most part. Fitzgerald and star receiver Fred Ross (three catches, 23 yards) were held in check.

It’s hard to tell who was more dominant between the Tide’s offense and defense.

On the offense, Alabama football averages 216.0 yards in passing and 262.6 yards in rushing.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 10 Penn State rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to upend unranked and sustain the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten East Division title hopes.

On its next drive, the Tide pushed the ball down the field easily.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Austin Appleby threw two touchdown passes, Jordan Scarlett ran for a career-high 134 yards and Florida beat SC and former coach Will Muschamp, moving closer to clinching the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division. The Bulldogs came crashing back down to reality Saturday.

Williams has caught 67 passes for 956 yards and six touchdowns this season. This potentially could be a trap game for Alabama coming off of a very physical and emotional game at LSU facing an opponent that many think they should beat easy.

Mississippi State used a 50-yard kickoff return by Brandon Holloway to set up on the UA 45 to start its next drive. And when he did have time to get rid of the ball, he completed just 10 of 33 passes, including five attempts that were broken up by Alabama defenders.

Alabama overpowered Mississippi State early and built a 30-0 halftime lead. He rushed for 15 yards.

Is Hurts a finished product yet?

Alabama (10-0, 7-0) had eight tackles for loss.

Griffith added a 28-yard field goal late in the second quarter to push it to 27-0.

Last week Mississippi State were likely fairly high on a lot of peoples lists to be beaten, maybe even blown out, but they upset the #4 Texas A&M Aggies to move to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the SEC.

It was important to get Hurts going after the way he struggled against LSU. The Mountaineers owned a 155-113 advantage in passing yards and a 17:01-12:59 edge in time of possession. This will be the Tide’s third straight trip to the SEC Championship game in Atlanta, making it the first team to do so since Florida in 1994-96. Mississippi State does have the SEC’s No. 6 rush defense.

Fitzgerald is the Bulldogs’ primary running threat while Hurts has also made a number of his plays with his feet, especially when the passing game isn’t clicking for the Crimson Tide. Dear opened the fourth quarter with a 22-yard reception from Fitzgerald.

Alabama’s defense has scored an awesome nine touchdowns – four on interception returns and five on fumble returns. Kicker Adam Griffith, punter JK Scott, linebacker Keith Holcombe and defensive back Levi Wallace were the special teams players of the week. Calvin Ridley scored from 4 yards out. He’s now 56 yard shy of the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback in a season.

Let’s be real here: if the starters are still playing in the second half, something has gone terribly wrong for Alabama. That was followed by a 14-yard Bateman to Derke Kief pickup that took the ball to the MSU 16.

Cooper Bateman found Trevon Diggs on a 5-yard pass for the game’s final score.
