Pushing the lineup even further, they’re working on both an A-segment offering, one that’s smaller than the Kona, and an E-segment utility, something larger than the Santa Fe.
Images of the new Hyundai Kona compact SUV are out.
He also said Hyundai would accelerate cooperation with technology firms like Cisco, Baidu and Uber on connected or self-driving cars.
Intended as a rival for the big-selling Nissan Juke, as well as other small SUVs such as the Renault Captur and Vauxhall Mokka X, the Kona is expected to reach the United Kingdom in October.
Inside, Hyundai is targeting best-in-class interior space with fold-flat rear seats and a high seating position. The Kona also benefits from the now common option of a contrasting roof, plus various wheel combinations. But this new Hyundai SUV has big shoes to fill.
Depending on the choice of powertrain, the Kona comes with two different rear suspension setups – 2WD will net you a torsion beam setup, and the all-wheel drive comes with a multi-link arrangement.
The new B-class auto is packed with “uncompromised individuality and innovative features” say Hyundai, and petrol versions include a 2.0-liter gas version, and 1.0 and 1.6-liter diesels for Europe.
Besides, the European version will also get a downsized 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai is also considering EV versions, and the Kona’s platform will support some sort of electrification.
As hinted above, Hyundai’s Raf van Nuffel hasn’t ruled out electric or hybrid versions of the Kona from being added over time, telling Auto Express that the Kona has been created to allow some kind of electrification.
In a first for the segment, the Kona features smartphone wireless charging which is available as an option with all Kona models.
A second screen in front of the driver – available in either 3.5in or 4.2in forms – shows the most crucial information. It is equipped with smart sensors including forward collision avoidance-assist, lane-keeping assist, a driver attention warning system and blind-spot collision warning system.
It means that it’s slightly bigger inside than rivals, too, and the 361-litre boot is a fraction larger than the Juke. Even from the rear the auto looks equally imposing thanks to the similar two-tier taillamp setup, beefy rear bumper and rear diffuser.
The Kona’s design is inspired by the strong, armored appearance of the Iron Man suit, with its powerful lines echoing the sensual body of the comic and cinematic hero.
How much will the Hyundai Kona cost?
It looks like Hyundai are on a full-scale SUV offensive.
Revealed today in Seoul, South Korea, Kona is the latest roll of the dice by a brand now occupying the top spot on more local buyers’ shopping lists following its calculated push towards a more upmarket look and feel.
What about the Kia Stonic?
The Kona will offer two four-cylinder powertrains in the US, both of which are used throughout Hyundai and Kia’s lineup. And, just like the i30, the Kona is made up of more than 50% high-strength steel to improve torsional rigidity and general strength.
