January 26 20:04 2016

One adult has been killed and two students seriously injured in a school bus accident at Amy Beverland School in Lawrence Township.

The bus unexpectedly jerked forward and jumped a curb at Amy Beverland Elementary School, killing Susan Jordan.

The 25 students on the school bus at the time and the driver were uninjured. A parent told our news gathering partners at RTV6 that kids were hit by the bus. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent Shawn Smith says the district “lost a great educator”.

It is so far unclear what caused the accident, but the driver was said to be working with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Fatal Alcohol and Crash Team in the investigation. “Quite frankly, we’re talking about a legend of education”.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 2:45 p.m.

Amy Beverland is a magnet school in the Lawrence Township school district that focuses on communications.

Parents are being asked to pick up their kids at the school.

One adult was killed, Riddle said.

She said the school and police handled the situation well.
