The reason for the Colts singing a pair of quarterbacks is because all three of their signal callers are injured in Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst.
Indy also promoted inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the active roster, signed guard Kitt O’Brien to the practice squad and put linebacker Josh McNary on injured reserve.
But he was released by New England before the season opener in September and has not yet played this season.
The Bleacher Report reported that Freeman will be working out for the team on Monday. “The 6’6”, 240 pound quarterback has always possessed impressive physical skills, but fell out of favor in Tampa Bay due to questionable decisions late in his tenure there. Last season actually started a playoff game with the Arizona Cardinals that playoff game was a 27-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers and Lindley did not perform that well in the loss by completing just 16 of 28 passes for 82 yards with a touchdown with two interceptions. Freeman was the No. 17 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Ninety minutes later, they announced the signing of Ryan Lindley.
That leaves Stephen Morris as the lone healthy quarterback.
The Colts (7-8) must win their Week 17 finale over the Tennessee Titans – possibly using a quarterback signed off the scrap heap – and have eight other Sunday games go their way to force a tie with the Houston Texans atop the AFC South and prevail in the necessary tiebreakers.
However, it shouldn’t surprise anyone in the least if both Freeman and Lindley receive serious consideration for the nod, especially since Morris has never appeared in a National Football League game during his career.
