Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will reportedly start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, as Browns veteran quarterback Josh McCown is now dealing with a shoulder injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown (13) struggles to his feet after taking a hit from Baltimore Ravens inside linebacker C.J. Mosley in the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, in Cleveland.
Griffin started the opener, but he is out for at least eight games with a broken coracoid bone in his left shoulder. That leaves Kessler as the lone quarterback left on the Browns’ roster, thus making him the team’s starter for this Sunday’s game versus the Dolphins.
According to Elias, the Browns are the second team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to start five different quarterbacks in five consecutive games. “We are going to figure something out, I promise you that”, head coach Hue Jackson said during his Monday media availability.
Kessler will be the Browns’ 26th starting quarterback since they returned to the National Football League in 1999, with Whitehurst, a career backup with a 2-7 record as a starter, a strong candidate to quickly become the 27th.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. While Panthers coach Ron Rivera is awaiting the results of an MRI on running back Jonathan Stewarts right hamstring, Fozzy Whittaker is set to start for Carolina. Now that McCown has gone out at least for a week, Kessler shockingly finds himself as the starting quarterback.
“I’ve been preparing as a starter since I got here, since rookie minicamp really”. There’s also a chance the Browns will add a veteran centre.
“It’s a physical game and you always have to be ready”, he said.
Despite predictability and lack of success on short-yardage plays, the Ravens are a combined 16-for-31 overall on third-down plays through two games. We have to fight like heck to get it back our way. We are going to do that, but we will figure that out as we go. Stay ready.’ That’s all I can do is continue to go with that and prepare this week and continue my process.
It’s been par for the course for an organization which has had 25 starting quarterbacks since 1999 and is undergoing the most massive rebuild in its history. The position has seen so many bodies over the years that seeing a new face doesn’t surprise any Browns fans. This is a guy that we feel very comfortable with, and we think he’s going to have an opportunity to ascend.
