The strike was planned to align with the 45th anniversary of the Attica prison rebellion at Attica Correctional Facility in NY.

Allen said there are fewer than 10 inmates involved in the riot at Perry, but the incident led officials to lock down the entire facility.

Officials called it a “peaceful protest” and said the inmates haven’t made any demands. The Mayo Correctional Institution is located off of US Hwy 27 West in Lafayette County. Although the Level 1 and Level 2 security classifications for Kinross prisoners are low-security, many of them are serving life sentences for murder and other violent crimes.
