Instagram has started to roll out a new feature – one that seemingly involves letting users know when someone else is recording their story using either screen recording or screenshots. It is a feature that Snapchat introduced some time back, and it seems as if Instagram’s version will function in a similar fashion.
When a user takes a screenshot or screen recording of an Instagram story, a small ‘sun’ symbol will appear beside their name in the list of Story Views. That will allow the person who posted the story to know that it has been recorded in some way.
Up till now screenshots and screen recordings have been used to save permanent versions of Instagram Stories that would otherwise disappear after a 24 hour period. Not only did it allow users to save Stories posts, but it was also completely undetectable to the user that published the post.
Now when a user attempts to take a screenshot or record any Instagram Stories for the first time a notification will appear alerting them to the fact that it will be visible to the user behind the post. The feature hasn’t rolled out fully yet, but some users are already reporting that they have received the notification or can see when others have recorded any of their Instagram Stories.
Some improvements have been made to this feature since it was first introduced, especially seeing as initially users realized they were able to bypass it by turning on the Airplane mode on their phones. That workaround has seemingly been plugged, and Instagram is now able to detect when users attempt to bypass the notification.
Although this update has numerous implications, it wasn’t completely unexpected. The fact that Snapchat has a similar feature and Instagram too started to notify users when their Direct Messages were captured back in 2016 mean that it was likely to happen sooner or later.
While there is no official word on when the update will become more widely available, it won’t require the Instagram app itself to be updated – barring any internal improvements. In most cases users will only know that the feature has been enabled when they either try to screenshot or record Instagram Stories, or see the ‘sun’ icon notifying them that a user has recorded one of theirs.
If you would like to record Instagram Stories or any other content from your screen regardless of this update, you could try Movavi Screen Recorder. It is easy to use, and will make learning how to record screen on Windows 7 or any other version of Windows a piece of cake.
With Movavi Screen Recorder not only can you define the capture area, but you can also set the audio source, frame rate, sound levels, and so on.
In fact you could even set it to record keyboard and mouse actions, automate the recording, and trim out any unwanted parts later on. Suffice to say it can be used for much more than just recording Instagram Stories.
