Nadine has been working as a university receptionist to test her skills – expressing a range of emotions and changing moods depending on the subject and the tone of her conversations, according to UPI.

She may not be sparkly like C-3PO, the golden droid of Star Wars fame, but humanoid robot Nadine glows with a charm of her own. Featuring an intelligent software similar to Apple’s Siri, the robot acts like a human. Nadine can be a personal assistant in offices and homes in the future.

As for Nadine her role for the moment is a stationary one, not least because she cannot walk. The software that helped in the creation of Nadine could also be turned virtual to make it appear on a computer or television screen to present a social companion at a low cost.

“Robotics technologies have advanced significantly over the past few decades and are already being used in manufacturing and logistics”, said Thalmann of the invention.

With countries around the globe facing challenges of an aging population, it is expected that social robots could become a solution to shrinking workforce.

FOR THE past four years she and her team have fused together research in diverse fields including engineering, computer science, linguistics and psychology. Nadine is created to look as much like Professor Thalmann as possible and it really does.

Edgar 1 is a robotic avatar, the physical representation of a human user who could be miles away. The user’s face and expressions will be displayed on the robot’s face in real time, while the robot mimics the person’s upper body movements. EDGAR can deliver speeches by autonomously acting out a script and with the help of an integrated webcam it can even engage in an intellectual banter with people he meets. They think similar technology can be used to provide both companionship and useful aid to the young and elderly.
