The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, called the embassy bombing a “deliberate and intentional act by the Saudi Arabian government” and labeled it a “violation of all global conventions and legal treaties regarding the protection and impunity of diplomatic compounds”.
He said the coalition would investigate Iran’s accusation and added that the Houthis has used civilian facilities including abandoned embassies.
Saudi Arabia’s execution of 47 individuals on terrorism charges, including Shiite cleric Namir al-Namir, a member of the Saudi Shiite community, caused angry protests in Iran and an attack on the Saudi diplomatic mission in Tehran.
Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, is held by Shiite rebels known as Houthis.
Missiles fired by the Saudi Arabian-led coalition in Yemen have hit Iran’s embassy in the capital Sanaa, Iran claimed on Thursday.
Riyadh has severed all ties with Tehran, withdrawn its diplomats and cut air links in response to weekend attacks on its missions in the Islamic republic.
Iraq offered to mediate between Saudi Arabia and Iran to end their dispute triggered by Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shi’ite cleric, saying on Wednesday it could spill over into the rest of the region.
Saudi allies Bahrain, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia also cut diplomatic ties with Tehran.
“For the past 2¹/₂ years, Saudi Arabia has opposed Iran’s diplomacy”, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif charged at a news conference.
Kuwait recalled its ambassador to Tehran on Tuesday, while the United Arab Emirates has partially downgraded diplomatic relations.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency reported Wednesday that staff at the Iranian Embassy in Riyadh and the Iranian Consulate in Jiddah had left the country. It said the decision came during an emergency meeting of the cabinet of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
The statement also condemned remarks that directly accused President Erdoğan, and said the publications aimed to create a negative image of him in the eyes of Iranian people.
