President Donald Trump’s sanctions on Iran have won the praise of the Zionist Organization of America, according to a statement from the organization’s president, Morton A. Klein. If attacked by the US, Iran will immediately retaliate by firing a missile at Tel Aviv, he asserted.
In an interview with Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly Sunday during the Super Bowl pre-game program, Trump called the pact “the worst deal I’ve ever seen”, while detailing his opposition to the Iran deal. The test was likely a provocative probing of U.S. policy towards Iran, one of seven countries whose nationals are temporarily banned from travel to the United States. The White House has said “nothing is off the table” – even military action.
But the U.S. President didn’t leave it unnoticed, as he immediately slapped the nuclear-capable nation with new sanctions targeting 25 Iranian individuals and entities allegedly involved in the ballistic missile development.
On Jan. 29, Iran launched a new type of medium-range ballistic missile prompting an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Jan. 31. Officials said the tests were successful.
Most analysts, including supporters of Trump, believe that Iran has largely honoured the worldwide agreement curbing the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme, making an immediate military response to the missile test unlikely.
Today Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in the United Kingdom putting pressure on British Prime Minister Theresa May, who recently visited the White House, to do the same.
Iran’s leaders have repeatedly called for the annihilation of Israel and supporters chanted “death to America” after new USA sanctions were announced last week. Trump’s sentiments were shortly echoed by U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama eased sanctions on Iran as part of the landmark agreement, including a ban on the sale of many medical devices, affecting products used for nuclear medicine purposes with possible uses in an atomic weapons program.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran would not renegotiate the nuclear deal that Trump consistently criticised as being a gift to the Islamic Republic.
Donald Trump said it was putting Iran “on notice” over its “destabilising activity” after it test-fired a cruise missile.
Ryan said the Obama administration was derelict in holding Iran to account. Also, Iran helped the resistance in Iraq against the US invasion and occupation in 2003.
Supporters of Iranian president Hassan Rouhani have already hinted at the opportunity. “But Iran and European countries will not accept that”, Zarif told Tuesday’s edition of Ettelaat daily. An article in the Washington Post shows how Iran has grown into a major military power, forming alliances throughout the Middle East and becoming one of the few nations capable of projecting military force beyond its borders. Trump’s election and his vocal opposition to the deal, which he has described as “horrible” and “terrible” among other criticisms, risks compromising the limited progress made. The White House suggested the sanctions were only the “initial steps” of their response, indicating that the USA would no longer turn a “blind eye” to any hostile actions by Iran.
